The University of Santiago de Compostela was established in 1495, ranking it as one of the oldest universities in the world. It was given a confirmed status by a papal bull issued by the Pope Julius II in 1504. It has been the infrastructure for the city and region's educational foundation for over 500 years.
The university began mainly with instruction of religion and art, but since the mid-16th century it has continued to advance and grow with the emerging sciences and technologies; but, it still has a focus on the humanities and holds strong ties with the regions deep, rich culture and history.
Today, the public university has over 40,000 students and over 3,000 faculty and staff. There are two campuses, the main one located in the city of Santiago de Compostela and the second in Lugo, another city in Galicia.
The campus in Santiago de Compostela is quite centrally located within the city. It covers more than one million square meters of land which includes over 30 buildings that offer around 60 degrees.
The campuses have research buildings, student residence halls, sports facilities, and libraries. The University promotes many cultural events each year and is also involved with EU mobility projects that give foreign students the chance to study Spanish at the school and also to send the USC students abroad for a worldly education.
